David P. Billington escribió “The Tower and the Bridge: The New Art of Structural Engineering” en 1983. Con toda una carrera ya consolidada en las estructuras, especialmente exitosa en la investigación y la docencia, Billington plasmó en un libro el concepto del Arte Estructural y trató de explicar a través de un repaso a la historia de este, los conceptos que lo definen y los criterios que ha seguido para demostrar su independencia de la arquitectura y la escultura.Treinta años más tarde, el texto sigue teniendo vigencia, pero nunca fue traducido al castellano hasta ahora. Ignacio Payá Zaforteza, profesor titular de la Universitat Politècnica de València, conocedor del trabajo de Billington, con quien coincidió durante quince meses en la universidad de Princeton ha sido el impulsor de este proyecto y el encargado de la traducción, con la colaboración de Ramón Sánchez Fernández y Juan José Jorquera Lucerga.
Me siento profundamente honrado por la traducción al español de mi libro de 1983. El libro surgió de la asignatura"Structures and the Urban Environment” (“Estructuras y el medio ambiente urbano”) que se empezó a impartir en Princeton en 1974.
